The legacy of swimming legend Ian Thorpe will long be remembered in Australian sport the Minister for the Arts and Sport, Senator Rod Kemp, said today.

“Ian has made a wonderful contribution to Australian swimming and has left a legendary mark on swimming across the world,” Senator Kemp said.

“Ian will be remembered as Australia’s most successful Olympian winning nine medals and still holding the 200 and 400 metres freestyle world records.

“Australian swimming and Australian sport will miss one of its greatest ever competitors.

“I am sure all Australians wish him the best in the ‘next phase’ of his life after announcing his retirement from swimming.

“His achievements will inspire many young Australians and give them the confidence they can ‘take on the world’ and win.” Senator Kemp said.
