Bartels to steer ASC to Beijing

The Minister for the Arts and Sport, Senator Rod Kemp, today announced the re-appointment of Peter Bartels OA as the Chair of the Australian Sports Commission (ASC).

“It gives me great pleasure to announcethat Mr Bartels has accepted a further two year term,” Senator Kemp said.

“Over the past decade, Australians have enjoyed great success in the international sporting arena.

“While this success reflects the efforts of many dedicated athletes, coaches and support personnel, it also illustrates the Commission’s work in developing an effective national sports system that provides athletes with the support needed to reach their full potential on the international stage.

“Australian sport is facing a number of challenges in the future as more and more countries develop their own elite sports systems and allocate more resources to them. Australia is constrained by the relatively small pool of potential high performance athletes in our small population.

“I am confident, however, that Mr Bartels and his board at the ASC will ensure Australia’s national sports system is well supported to meet these challenges. I also look forward to the ASC’s continued commitment to build healthy and active communities by encouraging greater numbers of Australians, particularly young people, to participate in organised sport.” Senator Kemp said.

In 2006–07, the Australian Government will invest in excess of $250 million in Australian sport.

The ASC will receive around $192 million for activities that include:

  • the Australian Institute of Sport;
  • grants to National Sporting Organisations (NSOs) for programs that promote participation and high performance;
  • programs that encourage greater participation by particular groups, including children, people with a disability, women and Indigenous Australians;
  • targeted initiatives involving NSOs to expand the reach, business capability and sustainability of grass‑roots clubs and associations; and;
  • promotion of guidelines that ensure a fair, safe, ethical and inclusive sporting culture.
