Australian Film, Television and Radio School appointment

The Minister for the Arts and Sport, Senator Rod Kemp, today announced businessman Peter Ivany as the new Chair of the Council of the Australian Film, Television and Radio School (AFTRS).

“Mr Ivany brings considerable expertise and experience to the Council of the Australian Film, Television and Radio School Council,” Senator Kemp said.

“His experience in marketing, mentoring and managing entertainment, retail, media, communications and property businesses through periods of growth means he has the right expertise for the Council at this time.”

Mr Ivany currently owns and operates the Ivany Investment Group (IIG), which is a diversified investment company, that has an active involvement in IMAX Theatres, Base Backpackers and the Momentum Pacific Group.

Mr Ivany serves on the boards of base Backpackers, Momentum Pacific Group, the Museum of Contemporary Art and is the chair the Advisory Board of the Sydney Film Festival, the Sydney Swans Foundation and an Adjunct Professor of the University of Technology, Sydney. He has been CEO of Hoyts Cinemas, Hoyts Media (1988 to 1991) and of Hoyts Entertainment (1989 to 1990).

Senator Kemp also expressed the Australian Government’s appreciation for the major contribution the school’s outgoing Chair, Daniel Gilbert, has made during his six years at the helm of AFTRS.

“The School’s rapid responsiveness to industry trends will ensure it continues to grow as Australia’s premier centre for training film, television and radio professionals”, Senator Kemp said.

“Mr Gilbert has had an important role in building both the school’s standing and influence and in increasing the national and international recognition of the school’s graduates.”

Mr Gilbert guided the school’s crucial move to a digital operating environment with the introduction of cutting edge technology training and has been instrumental in planning the school’s relocation to the Moore Park area in Sydney.

AFTRS is funded by the Australian Government and identifies and develops new and emerging talent, trains industry professionals and assists them in their creative and professional development. Visit www.aftrs.edu.au for more information on the AFTRS.
