31 August 2004
The Minister for Communications, Information Technology and the Arts, Senator Helen Coonan and the Minister for the Arts and Sport, Senator Rod Kemp, today announced the appointment of Mr Ron Radford as Director of the National Gallery of Australia (NGA).
"I am delighted that such a distinguished director of one of our leading state galleries has been appointed to this key position and I look forward to his contribution to the ongoing success of the gallery in the years to come," Senator Coonan said.
Mr Radford has an extensive 28-year background as a museum professional in Victoria and South Australia and has worked at the Art Gallery of South Australia since 1981, including as director from 1991.
"Mr Radford's strong links with state and regional galleries throughout Australia and internationally and his extensive curatorial and leadership experience will be a great asset to the National Gallery of Australia," Senator Kemp said.
As Director of the Art Gallery of South Australia, Mr Radford has a proven track record of achievement, having overseen the consolidation of the collection, including several significant acquisitions, a successful building enhancement project and a critically acclaimed exhibitions program.
Mr Radford will take up his five year appointment at the end of the year.
The ministers also paid tribute to the outgoing NGA Director, Dr Brian Kennedy, noting that during his seven years as director, he worked extremely hard to ensure that more people across Australia would have access to the gallery's world renowned collection.
